The Dallas Stars and Dallas Mavericks are facing a significant turning point in their long-standing partnership of 32 years, mainly due to the Mavericks' plans to build a basketball-only arena. This change comes as team owners express diverging visions for their future venues. Stars owner Tom Gaglardi revealed discussions with Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont have evolved from potential collaboration on a shared arena to separate aspirations. Dumont's research suggests a basketball-centric facility would not accommodate hockey, leading to the conclusion that maintaining a shared space is not feasible.
As the Mavericks pursue 30 to 50 acres for their new arena, which they aim to occupy by the start of the 2031-32 season, the Stars are focusing on renegotiating their lease at the American Airlines Center (AAC) to secure their position as a sole tenant. Gaglardi remains optimistic about the AAC's prospects, advocating for its renovation and expressing confidence that both organizations can thrive even in a competitive environment.
