Memphis Grizzlies: Jay Huff
January 19, 2025
Jay Huff has emerged as a backup center with the Memphis Grizzlies, showcasing his potential as a floor-spacing player capable of contributing in transition. His performance in a 35-game sample this season has bolstered his value in a redraft scenario, suggesting he could have been a better pick for the Rockets at No. 23 in 2021. After a stint with the Rockets during the Summer League, he signed a two-way contract with the Denver Nuggets before finding a more permanent role with the Grizzlies.

Rockets Struck Out in 2021 Draft; Who Should Houston Have Taken Instead?

The Houston Rockets had a mixed outcome in the 2021 NBA Draft, successfully selecting Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun in the early rounds but struggling with later picks. Usman Garuba and Josh Christopher, chosen at Nos. 23 and 24 respectively, have not made significant impacts, with Garuba now out of the league and Christopher in the G League.

In a recent redraft analysis by Bleacher Report, writer Dan Favale suggested the Rockets should have picked Jay Huff, who has since found a role with the Memphis Grizzlies. Favale noted that Huff's performance in the NBA and Summer League showcases his potential.

Additionally, the Rockets' second pick, Justin Champagnie, is currently under a two-way contract with the Washington Wizards and is showing promise in his performance. Champagnie is averaging over nine points per game this season and could soon transition to a standard contract.
