Biggest Avalanche roster questions before the trade deadline

The Colorado Avalanche have made a significant move by acquiring Mikko Rantanen from the Carolina Hurricanes. In exchange, the Avalanche sent Martin Necas and Jack Drury to Carolina. This trade not only enhances Colorado's offensive capabilities but also provides them with increased salary cap flexibility, with Rantanen's hit at $9.25 million against the $8.225 million of Necas and Drury combined.

Looking ahead to the trade deadline on March 7, the Avalanche face crucial questions regarding roster additions and potential trades, particularly in light of captain Gabe Landeskog's uncertain return this season. The team has a pressing need for a larger center, and their current defensive corps requires reinforcement, especially after Josh Manson's injury. With around $4.76 million in cap space, the Avalanche may look to acquire a reliable defenseman or explore trades involving their draft picks.

In the upcoming offseason, if Landeskog remains sidelined, Colorado could see a cap space increase to nearly $16 million, providing further opportunities to strengthen their lineup. The future for players like Jonathan Drouin, who has been performing well, and the newly acquired Necas and Drury will also be pivotal as extensions can be negotiated starting July 1.

What should the Avalanche prioritize in upcoming trades? How will the Avalanche manage their roster size and cap hit as the deadline approaches? What impact do salary cap increases have on the Avalanche's strategy? How can Colorado build a sustainable competitive team for the future?
