The Penguins received Danton Heinen, Vincent Desharnais, and the rights to Melvin Fernstrom. The Rangers' 2025 pick is conditional, with a potential upgrade to an unprotected 2026 first-round pick if New York's selection falls in the top 13.

General Manager Patrik Allvin expressed optimism regarding the new acquisitions, praising Pettersson's size and two-way capabilities while noting O'Connor's versatility. Pettersson has shown promise this season, contributing 18 points in 47 games. O'Connor, on the other hand, has struggled to find a consistent role with star players, finding himself in the bottom six of the Penguins' forwards.

The trade comes on the heels of a recent blockbuster deal that sent Miller to the Rangers. The Canucks aim to enhance their depth, yet faced a setback in their immediate game, losing 5-3 to the Dallas Stars.
