Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has initiated a special legislative session to secure funding that may prevent the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals from relocating to Kansas. Following a failure to pass a funding plan during the regular session, Kehoe aims to solidify financial support for renovations to Arrowhead Stadium and a new ballpark for the Royals, with potential costs estimated between $2.5 and $3 billion.

The effort to retain the teams comes in the wake of a Kansas law authorizing substantial state bonds for stadium construction, funded through sports betting revenues and various taxes. The Chiefs and Royals, who have played in Missouri for over 50 years, are under pressure as their current leases extend only until 2031.
