José Alvarado makes his return to the Philadelphia Phillies after an 80-game suspension for violating MLB's performance-enhancing drug policy. Alvarado, a left-handed reliever from Venezuela, will soon start a minor league rehab assignment and is eligible to rejoin the big league roster on August 19. However, due to league rules, he will be ineligible for postseason play should the team qualify. The Phillies currently hold a narrow lead in the NL East over the New York Mets. Alvarado posted a heartfelt apology on Instagram, acknowledging his error and expressing his intent to help the team win moving forward. Prior to his suspension, he had a solid season with a 2.70 ERA and seven saves over 20 appearances and will miss out on a significant portion of his salary as part of the fallout from the suspension.
