Jane Long absorbs a larger peer group and extra staff, enabling seventh- and eighth-graders to participate in athletics, while the district reviews long-term options for Las Americas at the November board meeting amid ongoing staffing and budgeting adjustments.

Administrators note the move is part of a broader response to enrollment volatility tied to federal policy shifts affecting urban districts nationwide.

A Galveston police-involved shooting followed a roughly 17-mile pursuit that began with an attempted traffic stop in Hitchcock and ended near Seawolf Park on Pelican Island. After exiting his vehicle, the driver fired toward officers, who returned fire. The suspect died at UTMB Galveston. Texas Rangers will lead the investigation while Galveston PD conducts an internal review.

Negotiations reportedly progressed for about 20 minutes before the confrontation. The incident remains under investigation, with authorities evaluating use-of-force practices and policy as the case develops.

Two people died and six were wounded in a late-night shooting at Kickapoo Lucky Eagle Casino in Eagle Pass. Marcus Antley, a retired border patrol agent, was among the deceased, and the suspect is Keryan Rashad Jones, 34, of San Antonio, who was later arrested in Wilson County after a vehicle pursuit.

A weapon was recovered and the casino remained closed as investigators from Kickapoo Tribal Police, Maverick County Sheriff's Office, Texas DPS, Eagle Pass Police, Texas Rangers, Border Patrol and the FBI coordinate the probe.
