Spencer Stastney, a defenseman for the Nashville Predators, candidly shared his ongoing battle with anxiety and depression that nearly pushed him to retire from hockey in 2024. His struggles, rooted in family issues from a young age, were exacerbated by feelings of guilt over his hockey career as his family faced challenges. Seeking help through the NHLPA's player assistance program, Stastney found the support he needed to return to the ice after a year away.

After participating in therapy sessions, Stastney discovered that his anxiety stemmed from the guilt of enjoying his hockey career while his family dealt with their issues. His journey back to the NHL included stints with the Milwaukee Admirals, where he reignited his passion for the sport. Although he has resumed playing, Stastney acknowledges that he continues to work on his mental health and his relationship with hockey.
