Kampf, Lorentz and Tavares score for Maple Leafs in 3-1 win over Islanders - The Globe and Mail

In a thrilling matchup, the Toronto Maple Leafs secured a 3-1 victory over the New York Islanders at Scotiabank Arena, thanks to a standout performance from forward Steven Lorentz. Lorentz, known for his unique warm-up routine of jumping into the glass, scored a highlight-reel goal that proved pivotal in the game. This marked his fourth goal of the season, and he expressed his excitement, stating, "It’s one I’ll remember." The goal came midway through the second period, as Lorentz received a pass from Ryan Reaves, skillfully maneuvered around defenceman Scott Mayfield, and delivered a wrist shot into the top corner.

Toronto's David Kampf opened the scoring late in the first period, and John Tavares sealed the win with an empty-net goal. William Nylander contributed significantly with two assists. Goaltender Joseph Woll was impressive, making 30 saves, helping Toronto improve to a record of 23-13-2, which ties them with the idle Florida Panthers for the top spot in the Atlantic Division.

Despite the victory, the Maple Leafs played without their captain, Auston Matthews, who was placed on injured reserve due to an upper-body injury. Matthews' absence was felt, but the team rallied, with Lorentz's energetic play and physical presence making a notable impact. The Islanders managed to get on the scoreboard thanks to Jean-Gabriel Pageau's goal, but Lorentz quickly restored the Leafs' lead just 16 seconds later.

Both teams showcased resilience, with successful coach’s challenges early in the second period. The Islanders will look to bounce back as they prepare to host the Maple Leafs in the second game of their home-and-home series.
