The Texas Rangers have traded pitcher Owen White to the Cincinnati Reds for cash considerations, as announced on Monday. This move follows White's designation for assignment in December, which came after the Rangers acquired left-handed relief pitcher Hoby Milner. At just 25 years old, Owen White was once hailed as a top 100 prospect, but his performance has significantly declined over the last two seasons, preventing him from establishing himself in the major leagues.
Selected in the second round of the 2018 MLB draft, White initially showed promise with a solid 3.06 ERA in his first professional season in 2021. He garnered attention as the league's 61st prospect by Baseball America and even participated in the All-Star Futures Game in 2023. However, his fastball velocity dropped in subsequent seasons, leading to diminished effectiveness, which culminated in a troubling 5.64 ERA across 99 innings for Triple-A Round Rock last season. His brief stint with the major league team saw him surrender eight earned runs in just three innings, leaving him with a career ERA of 13 earned runs over seven innings as a Ranger.
