The New Orleans Saints have appointed Brandon Staley, former head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers, as their new defensive coordinator. Staley's hiring marks the third coordinator addition by Saints head coach Kellen Moore within a week. Alongside Staley, the Saints are reportedly finalizing the hiring of Doug Nussmeier as their offensive coordinator, previously the quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles, who recently won Super Bowl LIX against the Kansas City Chiefs with Jalen Hurts earning MVP honors.

Staley, who previously led the Chargers from 2021 to 2023, worked with Moore during their time at the Chargers, and both have extensive coaching ties. Staley's defensive strategies gained acclaim during his tenure as the Rams' defensive coordinator, where he helped the team lead the league in both scoring and total defense. As the Saints look to improve their defense, Staley's experience and previous successes may prove valuable.
