The Pittsburgh Steelers have been on a quest to enhance their wide receiver corps, a pursuit that began last offseason when they almost acquired Brandon Aiyuk from the San Francisco 49ers. Their efforts continued into the trade deadline, where they were close to securing Christian Kirk from the Jacksonville Jaguars, only for him to suffer a season-ending injury. Ultimately, the Steelers signed Mike Williams from the New York Jets, but his contributions have been limited, with only eight receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown across eight games.
Meanwhile, George Pickens has emerged as a standout player in 2024, recording 58 catches for 900 yards and three touchdowns. However, his absence during Weeks 14 to 16 underscored the Steelers’ urgent need for more offensive firepower. As a potential solution, analyst Jack Aaron suggested that the Steelers might target Chris Godwin of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who is set to enter free agency. Despite being only 28, Godwin has faced significant injuries throughout his career, which could make teams wary. Nevertheless, he remains a reliable slot receiver and could alleviate pressure on key players.
This season, Godwin has participated in only seven games due to an ankle injury sustained in Week 7 against the Baltimore Ravens, during which he managed to catch 50 passes for 576 yards and five touchdowns. A third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, he previously made the Pro Bowl in 2019 and played a crucial role in the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl victory alongside Tom Brady in 2020. With a career total of 579 receptions for 7,266 yards and 39 touchdowns, Godwin could form a dynamic partnership with Pickens if the Steelers pursue him this offseason.
